‘Operation Ark’ by Pen Farthing and Festival

The evacuation was disastrous, shambolic and deadly. Pen Farthing refused to abandon his charity’s staff or rescue animals. Operation Ark was born. He was branded a villain who valued “pets over people”, blamed for deserting Afghans, accused of risking British soldiers – nothing could be further from the truth.

Operation Ark was a partial success with the safe evacuation of the Nowzad animals and Pen from Kabul during the last few hours of Kabul airport being secured by British and American troops.

Sadly the Taliban were not willing to let our Afghan national staff leave Afghanistan even though they finally had the correct paperwork from the UK government.

The dogs and cats of Operation Ark are now safely in quarantine and holding kennels relevant to their vaccinations and DEFRA approved blood testing dates and will be available for adoption from the Nowzad website in due course. Please do not message the quarantine kennels directly. They do not have the capacity or authority to adopt out any Nowzad dogs or cats.

The list of available dogs and cats and the procedure for adopting them will be published during mid-September. Our only focus now as a charity is the safety of our staff who were forced to remain in Kabul.

Thank you for your amazing and super generous support and for understanding as we move forward into a new chapter of the Nowzad charity.

‘Operation Ark’ by Pen Farthing

Pen has this to say, ‘Finally I have confronted some demons and realised the time was right for me to tell my side of Operation Ark, and not the one that played out in the media. I am truly grateful to Claret Press who agreed to publish the true story that others were scared of doing.

The true events surrounding the two weeks of August 2021 and Operation Ark – the evacuation of 171 animals and 67 people!

Join Us on Saturday 16 May: Vijay Brings Nowzad to the Tyneside Vegan & Music Festival!

Mark your calendars for Saturday, 16 May 2026! We are thrilled to announce that Vijay Kritzinger will be representing Nowzad at the Domain, Northumbria University, from 11 am to 3.30 pm. She will be running the special charity fundraising stand hosted by our friends at North East Animal Rights (N.E.A.R.).

Newcastle is the place to be this May for a celebration of compassion, community, and great music. While you enjoy the festival vibes and explore the plant-based treats, be sure to stop by the N.E.A.R. stand on Sandyford Road.

Vijay will be there to share the latest updates on our mission to rescue and protect animals in conflict zones like Afghanistan and Ukraine. It is a fantastic opportunity to meet one of our dedicated champions in person, learn more about where your support goes, and enjoy a fun day out for a good cause.

We can’t wait to see you there!
